"Upendo Wanyama Wote, Love For All Animals"

Kilimanjaro Animal Rescue is one of only 3 rescue shelters operating in the whole of Tanzania. The rescue admittedly began by accident! Featherstale Children's Village is a community for special needs children in the Kilimanjaro region. Our staff simply could not turn a blind eye to the dogs they saw suffering on the streets around them. In time so many dogs were brought back that we had to start a rescue! In fact dogs lived at Featherstale before children did! And by now we are a much needed safe haven for animals in crisis, and home to nearly 100 rescue dogs.

What Do We Do As An Animal Rescue?

Our goal is simple, to rehome and rehabilitate any dog in need. We also aim to spay or neuter dogs where possible to reduce the endlessly increasing population in our area.
In Tanzania the rights of dogs and domestic animals is a topic that a lot of focus goes toward. With so many people struggling in poverty, it's inevitable animal rights take a back seat whilst the rights and comfort of children etc is addressed by the limited budget authorities.
We thus aim to change that. As we work in child education also, we bridge a gap in the public that is much needed. The rights of dogs are gravely misunderstood by many, and they are often seen only as a means for security and little else. With education however, we are seeing more and more persons around us offer better care for their pets, and even reaching out to us with concerns for animals in the community.

Education will be key in helping to reduce the stray dog population, but also raising the quality of care and reducing abuse from domestic animal owners.
Working in schools, we educate as many children as we can on animals rights, and just how much a dog can do other than security with it. In 2020 we will be holding open days for children to visit also, as we constantly seek to find better ways to help the dogs of Tanzania.

At the shelter, we provide stray street dogs with a home, food and medical costs, if and when needed. We are searching for safe and loving homes for the rescue dogs always and have rehomed many, both in Tanzania and overseas. We teach about Animal Welfare. We include the Children living in Feathers Tale Children’s Village in their care, and even use some of our more well-mannered dogs as therapy animals on occasion.

Why Is An Animal Rescue Needed?

All dogs in our care were either starved, abused, suffered from medical problems like mange or have been hit by cars and were in desperate need of help. Some of our worst cases involved dogs being beaten half to death, or hung from trees to euthanize them… Growing dog populations are deemed a nuisance, meaning local authorities shoot dogs on the street. This is why we offer an alternative when and where ever we can

In a country where people suffer, domestic animals suffer even more.

SUCCESS STORIES

Houdini was found after being hit by a car. He was on deaths door the day I bundled him into my car and brought him back to the rescue shelter…

He was starving and his back leg was broken beyond repair from the collision. Houdini is now fattened up, and for all missing a leg, is now healthy and living with an American family here in Tanzania!
